Selah’s journey in the world of art began at the age of eight when he discovered his passion while watching his cousin, who was also eight-years-old, draw in an alley in Cordele, Georgia. Since then, his dedication to the arts has taken him on countless journeys, spanning across various cities and countries worldwide, including Georgia, Detroit, New York, and Washington D.C., all the way to Japan, to name a few.
Selah is renowned for his diverse artistic portfolio, which encompasses murals, sculptures, live paintings, and more. His artistic creations have found homes in galleries and collections around the globe, leaving an indelible mark on the art scene.
One of the most remarkable achievements in Selah’s career is the induction of his artwork into the Smithsonian collection. The painting inducted is a portrait of the renowned composer and musician James “Dewitt” Yancey, known artistically as J Dilla. Yancy had a prolific career marked by a series of singles and remix projects. He worked with various artists, including; Something for the People, Brand New Heavies, renowned hip-hop acts like Busta Rhymes, Janet Jackson, De La Soul, The Pharcyde, Crustation, A Tribe Called Quest, and Q-Tip’s solo album, among others. Many of his productions were released without his individual credit, instead attributed to the Ummah, a production collective comprising himself, Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest, Q-Tip, and later Raphael Saadiq of Tony! Toni! Toné!. Nevertheless, he received songwriting credit for all of his non-remix productions within the Ummah. His work serves as a lasting testament to his artistic prowess.
