Over 25% of US Healthcare Patients Forget Appointments, Public Poll Reveals

A public poll of 1,000 individuals across the United States discovers over a quarter of people have forgotten to attend an important medical appointment.

Recent studies have established that high numbers of medical appointments go unattended. This costs the United States healthcare service billions of dollars each year. While losses can be heavy, data uncovered by ReminderCall.com – a leading provider of appointment reminder software – suggests there is a way to improve the situation.

ReminderCall.com conducted a public poll of 1,000 United States citizens.

Data was collected from individuals across the entire country, including all demographics, to ensure comprehensive coverage of the typical healthcare consumer. The survey asked respondents if they’d ever missed a healthcare appointment due to forgetting their schedule. Included in this poll were appointments with both primary care providers – such as hospitals and physicians – as well as specialty care providers – physical therapists, dentists, chiropractors, etc.

The data revealed that 27.6% of patients had missed a healthcare treatment or session due to forgetting their scheduled appointment.

Chantal Halmos, President of ReminderCall.com, commented on the findings:

“Many practices and services in healthcare are suffering from no-shows. While it might seem alarming that a significant number of patients are simply forgetting their appointments, the news that over a quarter of individuals do show up is actually a good thing for the industry.

“Although some issues that lead to no shows are unavoidable, patient forgetfulness can be prevented using communication strategies. Modern tools such as automated appointment reminders enable healthcare practices to develop cost-effective solutions to appointment attendance drop-offs. This improves their ability to focus on support and care for patients.”

Previous studies into strategies that can reduce no-show rates have identified reminder solutions as highly successful tools for the healthcare system. Research shows that following the introduction of software, attendance can rise by up to 37%. Further support of reminder technology comes from a review published in Sage Journals. The article concludes that “the evidence is overwhelming that reminders have a positive effect on non-attendance rates.”
