Taking home a multitude of wins

Sylvia Chensen, a newcomer to the world of competitive bodybuilding, has taken the sport by storm in her first season, winning multiple awards including 1 overall title in the NSW Swimsuit division and 14 gold and 9 silver medals across both Bikini and Swimsuit categories!

“I wanted to challenge and teach myself to be more disciplined with my eating habits and training.” Sylvia shared.

A Sydney resident, Sylvia first became interested in bodybuilding mid 2022 after turning 30.

“I had a friend who competed the year prior and was inspired by what she was able to achieve.”

Sylvia began training rigorously, following a strict diet and workout regimen to build muscle and tone her body. She quickly discovered a passion for the sport and decided to compete in her first bodybuilding competition earlier this year.

Despite being a newcomer to the sport, Sylvia blew away the competition, earning multiple awards for her impressive physique and stage presence after competing in 5 shows (ICN & NBA) in March and April this year.

“The highlight for me was making so many new friends who shared the same passion and goals, and were going through a similar journey as me in prep.”

When asked what the most challenging aspect was, Sylvia said it was the diet part of it all.

“Having to ignore hunger levels is extremely difficult for me as I love to eat and was in the habit of snacking a lot throughout the day.”

Looking ahead, Sylvia is in two minds about competing again. For now, she is working on getting to a healthy maintenance weight and putting on muscle; working on an overall healthy lifestyle and appearance.

“If I were to continue, I’d like to do Season A again next year in 2024.”

Sylvia’s best advice to those thinking of going down the same path is to enjoy the whole process, and understand that your lifestyle will change drastically and may involve a lot more compromise (like not going out to eat with family and friends all the time). The prep journey will also require lots of time and dedication; incorporating gym, meals, cardio, and posing practice.

“With all that said, it will all be worth it come show day. The feeling of accomplishment is like nothing else, and being able to show off your hard work is so rewarding. Plus you will have something amazing to look back on in the future.”

As to what Sylvia is up to these days, she has been slowly working through a list of foods she was craving during prep. Like many other competitive bodybuilders, the first thing Sylvia did post-comp was enjoy a big meal with her friends!

Wherever Sylvia decides to take her journey, we will for sure be continuing to cheer her on!
