Abraham Great, a British Nigerian, Businessman, and Humanitarian, has expressed his valid and convincing views on the president’s speech on 1st October. Having appreciated and respected parts of the speech, he has listed major areas that can affect the twitter ban lift.

October 8, 2021 – One of the major highlights of the president’s October 1st Independent speech was his declaration of lift on Twitter ban, which became one of the vital punchlines for media headlines. Being at an eminent position and as a successful humanitarian, Abraham Great, observed that the speech was heavy until the twitter ban was given attention and should have been the starting point to draw the youth’s attention that accounts for 70% of the population.

He is of the opinion that the clarity around the key areas of discussion with Twitter was very praiseworthy and senses that Twitter’s operation in Nigeria is based on five core areas, namely, Security, Physical presence, Taxation, Dispute Resolution and Local Content. Quoting security, he believes that the best way is to sign a Non-Disclosure and a non-circumvention agreement with Twitter because of the risks involved with the current cyber hacking era. And, every nation should take their own internet space responsibly.

Physical presence would not have been an issue, as Twitter would have come to Nigeria soon itself, although Information Sharing control measures should be implemented without hampering freedom of speech. This is tightly intertwined with taxation as a social media company can only be taxed based on its physical presence in Nigeria. Having a strong impression that Nigeria is full of talented and skilful youth who need resources, he suggested that the funds be channelled in that direction.

Abraham Great lauded the president for his perspective on dispute resolution. He was quoted saying, “You really never make well-making decisions based on emotions; you end up losing. Without a ban, the same 5 core areas could easily be discussed if there was no personal eccentricity.”

Lastly, he firmly believes that Nigeria is not short of content. The size of the nation and the daily events are discussed by Nigerians in their own home country as well as abroad, making Nigerian content a substantial part of Twitter. Abraham Great further mentioned, “The 37 minutes of the speech could have been more efficiently utilised in discussing core details of the nation and connecting with the new generation of the country.”
