From dissecting to engineering, students in the Chula Vista Elementary School District continue to explore exciting STEAM-focused topics among distance learning with CVESD’s Innovation LIVE events! Each week hundreds of students, teachers, and community members tune in to participate in interactive and innovative activities. All the activities are aimed to help students enjoy learning about interesting STEAM topics like engineering design and construction, physical activity and wellness, and wildlife biology.

Karen Quiros, CVESD Science Resource teacher at the Living Coast Discovery Center, commented on the live activities saying, “It’s a lot more motivational for them (students) to see a live animal and then want to learn about it instead of maybe just reading about it in a book. So, we enhance their science curriculum here at the Living Coast, and we want to bring that to their classrooms still.”

The collaboration between different teachers and organizations to create the Innovation LIVE events has allowed even more students to connect and interact with one another virtually and on the chat boards during activities. Each Friday, students make sure all of their tasks are complete so that they can participate in the activities and lessons.

Overall, the events have generated great student engagement and attendance. “We know that people, students, the business community, and all of our partners and teachers are all embracing this mode of education with our Friday Virtual Learning experiences,” said Matthew Tessier, CVESD Assistant Superintendent. “That tells us that our vision of continuing this exposure and continuing this innovation will and really should continue to happen.”

Innovation team members Christy Bystrak, Christopher Garcia, Melissa Hughes, Karen Quirós, Ricardo Ramirez, and Instructional Services Coordinator Michael Bruder all contribute to the amazing Innovation LIVE! events that engage and inspire students.
