The Upcoming 7th International Festival of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, Chengdu, China Opened on October 17, 2019

The 7th International Festival of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, Chengdu, China (hereinafter referred to as the “festival” ) will be held in Chengdu, China from October 17th to October 22nd, 2019, which is sponsored by Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People’s Republic of China, the People’s Government of Sichuan Province, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and China National Commission for UNESCO and undertook by Chengdu Municipal People’s Government, Sichuan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, China Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center and CRIHAP.

 

With the theme of “inherit colorful cultures, create and share a better life”, the festival will hold nearly a variety of 500 activities including international forums, exhibitions, competitions, performances, theme branch venues and supporting activities. At present, more than 70 countries, regions and international organizations and over 300 foreign guests have confirmed to participate in the festival.

More specifically, the International forums will gather more than 500 experts, scholars and inheritors at home and abroad to carry out activities such as the heritance of the intangible cultural heritage and tourism development and the capacity-building training on the intangible cultural heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region. The international exhibitions are composed of six parts, namely, the exhibition of the support from intangible cultural heritage for poverty alleviation and rural revitalization achievements, the “The Belt and Road” traditional handicraft exhibition, the authorized exhibition of intangible cultural heritage creative design works, etc. with the exhibition area of more than ten thousand square meters. Particularly, supported by the French Consulate General in Chengdu and the traditional crafts workstation, six French handicraft artists will join hands with the inheritors of lacquer ware, silvery flower and other intangible heritage projects to show the innovative works integrating Chinese and western culture. At the same time, the artisans from Hungary, Serbia and other countries will have a live performance on the production of Easter eggs and felt balls.

The international competitions will carry out three major activities, made up of Chinese traditional competitive arena, bamboo weaving competition and Sichuan school bonsai competition. The international performances will be conducted by 21 international teams and 31 domestic teams to show the traditional cultures and arts such as American Hawaii hula, Indian dance, the water festival of Chinese Han nationality, the torch festival of Yi nationality and bamboo instrument. The branch venues and supporting activities will be held in 10 cities and prefectures in Sichuan and 12 districts, cities and counties in Chengdu and other universities such as Sichuan University and Sichuan Normal University to bring residents into the atmosphere of intangible cultural heritage.

Founded in 2007 and held in Chengdu each two years, the International Festival of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, Chengdu, China is an international cultural event aimed at promoting the protection of human intangible cultural heritage and making contracting parties to exchange and learn from each other on the implementation of the convention for the protection of intangible cultural heritage and an international platform for friendly dialogue between Chinese civilization and other civilizations in the world. By now, the festival has been successfully held for six times, accumulative total to more than 2,000 activities, more than 8000 intangible heritage exhibited projects, more than 500 performed and participated teams. Moreover, over 4,000 representatives from each country and non-governmental organizations, 40 thousand domestic representatives, about over 20 million citizens and tourists have participated in the festival, which has become an important festival widely recognized and participated in by the International community, an key window for Chengdu to demonstrate to the outside world and an important support for Chengdu to build a world-famous cultural city.
