This year is the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and France. As practical cooperation increasingly deepens, Chengdu and France also see their relationship upgrade thanks to an encouraging growth momentum and an immense business cooperation potential. On Sept. 23-27, the French Session (the fourth session) of Chengdu International Business Experience Trip (CIBET) was organized for inviting French enterprises, authoritative organizations and industry representatives with core competitiveness to visit and investigate the beautiful city of Chengdu for the purpose of extensive business matchmaking for French businesses and the local market in respect of resources, marketing and projects.

By the end of the event, agreements had been reached on six business projects. With continual opportunities coming into existence, the event is expected to further drive Chengdu’s pursuit of the goal of becoming an international gateway hub, an open inland economy, a business-friendly international city and a pivotal international consumer economy.

Fruitful Success

Agreements Signed on Six More Projects

These years Chengdu and France have introduced increasingly frequent partnerships, starting cooperation in many fields like economy & trade, culture, rail transit and environmental protection. In 2017, French Ambassador to China Jean-Maurice Ripert paid a visit to Chengdu, saying that the city was the only in China with an increasing population of French nationals.

French enterprises invest widely in Chengdu, primarily in industrial technology R&D, finance, public services & facilities and retail, with FDI contribution climbing year over year. The Sino-French Ecopark, based in Chengdu and enjoying renown as a benchmark project symbolic of China-France cooperation, is a major investment where Chinese and French companies, entities and organizations maintain comprehensive local cooperation. At present, Sino-French Ecopark puts emphasis on developing the automotive and smart manufacturing industries in an effort to upgrade the exchange and collaboration between Chengdu and France in industry, technology and scientific research.

The CIBET kicked off its French Session on the morning of Sept. 27, striking quite a few business deals that added to the cooperation between Chengdu and France. The Sino-French Ecopark entered into separate strategic partnership agreements with Tulip Inn China (a hotel brand owned by Louvre Hotels Group), the Marco Polo Academy, the city of Autun, and the International School of Paris (ISP) as part of a dialogue on cooperation and development. The ASEAN Center signed a strategic partnership agreement with UEG (a French global education group), while Chengdu United Tech Development Co., Ltd. signed an technical solution agreement with Olixus on the SmartGiant smart testing platform project.

The event drew attention from nearly 800 media organizations worldwide, including nearly 200 Chinese media organizations (e.g. people.com.cn, xinhuanet.com, CRI Online, youth.cn, Chengdu Daily and Chengdu News) at national, provincial and municipal levels, and nearly 600 influential global publications and overseas media organizations (e.g. ABC, NBC, Herald Journal and Fox).

Extensive Investigation Trips

Seeking New Cooperation Opportunities for the Benefit of both

During the five-day event, Chengdu Economic & Technological Development Zone, Qingbaijiang and other administrative divisions took the initiative to launch a variety of promotional campaigns with success and demonstrate a liveable and business-friendly environment in every detail.

More than 30 French representatives visited many local attractions, including Sino-French Ecopark, Luodai Boke Town, Chengdu International Railway Port, China-Europe Center, Chengdu Planning Exhibition Hall, Kuanzhai Alley, Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and more, to look into the development of the city and how it made itself a garden city successfully. Due to personal experience with local cultural tourism, technology, electronics & IT, new energy and automotive industry advantages, French guests were able to seek new cooperation opportunities for the benefit of both.

As a passage connecting international markets, the Chengdu section of the China-Europe Express delivers an unending, convenient flow of “Made-in-Chengdu” goods back and forth between Chengdu and the world. After the second airport comes into operation in the near future and ushers in a “dual-core” era, Chengdu will spend less time getting into closer, more seamless contact with France and the world. Upon the completion of an international logistics system, Chengdu will be integrated more quickly and effectively into the global supply chain, expediting the birth of a new open economy.

A Foreseeable Future

Guiding Chengdu on Its Way to a New Cosmopolitan City

The CIBET epitomizes a city involving itself aggressively in global economy and cooperation. With the further intensification of the open-door policy and the implementation of the Belt and Road initiative, Chengdu is striving to emerge as an inland open economy of strategic importance as it maximizes the resource potentials of the home and overseas markets, therefore helping Chengdu businesses to go global and foreign investors to localize seamlessly.

While on the French Session of CIBET, former Champagne-Ardenne Committee Chairman Jean-Paul Bachy said the CIBET presented the positive image of an open city by offering a highly recommendable platform for business invitation, international trade cooperation and international economic cooperation. The CIBET was also symbolic of the fact that Chengdu thought very highly of the cooperation with France, he said. Deeply impressed by the goodwill and friendliness of the city, French investors will have a favorable outlook on the local business environment and cooperation opportunities.

Quite a lot of French guests expressed their good impression of the CIBET and their wish to share it with their compatriots so that more French enterprises and entities would like to come to Chengdu for commercial opportunities and contributions to dialogue and bilateral economic cooperation.

Chengdu is going global. It’s awash with opportunities. An initiative forged by the Chengdu Municipal Bureau of Commerce, the 2019 CIBET has so far attracted as many as 100 foreign guests and investors from ASEAN member states, Germany, France and other European countries. In every aspect the CIBET demonstrates how a business-friendly international city boosts opportunity creation, communication and cooperation with the world.
